21 Feb 2025

As AI technology continues to grow, the challenges surrounding its use and potential risks are becoming more evident. This Safer Internet Day, Microsoft sheds light on the increasing concerns about AI and its impact on online safety. With new research findings highlighting these issues, Microsoft is taking proactive steps by launching new resources to educate and empower users in navigating the evolving digital landscape responsibly.

Key Findings from Microsoft’s 9th Global Online Safety Survey

  • 51% of respondents globally have used AI (up from 39% in 2023).
  • 88% express worries about generative AI, including scams, sexual/online abuse, and deepfakes.
  • 73% found it hard to spot AI-generated images.
  • 66% of respondents encountered at least one online risk in the past year.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Online Safety

  • Balancing Safety & Rights: Prioritizes human rights (privacy, free expression) while combating harmful content.
  • Regulatory Advocacy: Supports tailored, risk-based regulations (e.g., stricter rules for social media versus productivity tools like Word) and advocates for modern laws to combat abusive AI-generated content.
  • Global Engagement: Collaborates with policymakers to protect children and uphold digital safety.
